How Do I Get a PennKey?

Step 1: Get a PennKey Setup Code

• Penn automatically emails Setup Codes with instructions to incoming students. You will receive an email sent to the email address you used when you applied.
• If you didn't receive a Setup Code, please check your junk and spam folders.

Step 2: Register your PennKey

Go to the PennKey Registration(link is external) application and use the Setup Code to register your PennKey.

Notes: 

• If you do not have or did not provide Penn with a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN), you were given a Penn-assigned SSN. This number is different from both your Penn ID and Admissions identification numbers. Your Penn-assigned SSN was sent to you separately from your PennKey Setup Code. Please contact your school's Admissions Office for your full Penn-assigned SSN if you cannot locate it.
• If you see a "data mismatch" error, that means that your legal name, date of birth, or Social Security number don't match our records. For help with this, please contact Office of the University Registrar(link is external).
• If your Setup Code has expired and you need to request a new one, please contact PennKey Support.

• Go to the Penn Alumni PennKey Help (link is external)website.
• Review the guidance and follow the instructions for obtaining a PennKey.

Note: Please contact daralumnipennkey@dev.upenn.edu(link is external) if you need assistance finding your PennID number and have other alumni-related needs (transcripts, MyPenn, etc.)

Step 1: Get a Setup Code

• Penn automatically emails Setup Codes to newly hired faculty and staff as a part of their onboarding process(link is external). You will receive an email sent to the email address you provided in Workday.
• If you didn't receive a Setup Code, please check your junk and spam folders.
• If you are on campus, you can also request a PennKey Setup Code from the PennCard Center(link is external) when you pick up your PennCard. 

Step 2: Register your PennKey

Go to the PennKey Registration(link is external) application and use the Setup Code to register your PennKey.

Step 1: Determine if you need a PennKey 

If you need to access Knowledge Link training in the Learning Portal(link is external), UPHS recommends that you use your UPHS network login instead of obtaining a PennKey.

1. Go to the UPHS PennKey Help(link is external) website.
2. Review the Quick Troubleshooting Steps for guidance and instructions.

Step 2: Get a Setup Code and register your PennKey

If you still need a PennKey, you'll need a Setup Code to register it.

1. Go to the UPHS PennKey Help(link is external) website.
2. Follow the Get a Setup Code and Setup Code Locations instructions.
3. Once you have a Setup Code, follow the Register your PennKey instructions.

Note: The University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) includes The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Pennsylvania Hospital, Chester County Hospital, Doylestown Health, Lancaster General, and Princeton Health.

1. Go to the CHOP PennKey Administration(link is external) website.
2. Use the PennKey Request Form to request a PennKey.

Step 1: Get a Setup Code

All University guests must be sponsored. If you are a sponsored guest, please contact your sponsor to obtain a Setup Code. 

Step 2: Register your PennKey

Go to the PennKey Registration(link is external) application and use the Setup Code to register your PennKey.

Notes: 

• A sponsored guest is an individual who has an official business need for a PennKey but is not a Penn faculty member, staff member, student, or University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) employee.
• Examples of a sponsored guest include, but are not limited to, advisors, service providers, consultants, high school summer participants, visiting students, volunteers, and CHOP, Wistar, and Monell employees.
