Penn is proud to announce the availability of three Enterprise AI Tools with enhanced data security for faculty, staff, and students. Microsoft Copilot Chat and Grammarly are available at no additional charge over existing Penn agreements, and OpenAI ChatGPT Edu is available for a fee.

Information Systems & Computing (ISC), Penn’s central IT organization, manages enterprise contracts for each tool. Users should follow Penn’s Guidance for Use of Generative AI. For product inquiries, please contact your IT Support Provider.

Tools provided at no additional charge over existing Penn agreements:

  1. Microsoft Copilot Chat, a full-range AI-powered chat client running on ChatGPT, provides web search enhanced with generative AI. Copilot Chat is self-service at this site. It is currently approved for Low and Moderate Risk Data as defined by the Penn Data Risk Classification. Please periodically check ISC’s AI Tools & Resources page regarding changes to guidance and terms of access.

  2. Grammarly provides generative AI-enhanced writing assistance, expanding beyond grammar and spell-check with options including AI-assisted outlining, citation, and revision. The tool is a pilot and self-service at this site. It is approved for Low, Moderate, and most High Risk Data as defined by the Penn Data Risk Classification, except SSNs and credit card data.

Tool available for a fee:

  1. OpenAI ChatGPT Edu is a full-range AI model capable of processing and generating text, images, and audio. It is available at $13 per user/month. For faculty and staff service requests, please contact your IT Support Provider. Students may have access when required in course or research experience, and paid by the School, department, or instructor. It is currently approved for Low and Moderate Risk Data as defined by the Penn Data Risk Classification. Please periodically check ISC’s AI Tools & Resources page regarding changes to guidance and terms of access.

Many other AI tools are available to the public, but they are less secure because they are not protected by our contractual data agreements. Users must be logged into a University account, and not a personal account, for appropriate protections. The agreements were reviewed by representatives from Penn ISC, Procurement Services, and Privacy, which review third-party AI technologies accessing personal data.

Additional details are available on ISC’s AI Tools & Resources page or the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Innovation (CETLI)’s AI Guidance page.
