FAQ
What is Copilot Chat vs M365 Copilot vs Copilot Studio?
Copilot Chat is a web-based chat agent for accessing Microsoft’s AI LLM offering. M365 Copilot is the AI assistant in many of Microsoft’s productivity products. Copilot Studio is a separate licensed product that lets you create chatbots or 'agents.' See ISC’s AI Tools page for details.
Who do I contact for a Copilot account? Is it true that I have to pay for a full year?
For faculty and staff of the university, a Copilot chat license is included with your Penn M365 account. Penn Carey Law and Perelman School of Medicine users need to contact their local IT support organizations for access.
All other Penn Faculty, Staff, and Students can

How do I get to Copilot Chat? How do I log in?
Using a browser, go to https://copilot.microsoft.com/ and click on the small silhouette of a person in the lower left corner of the browser window. Choose “Sign In” and then “Continue with Microsoft." In the sign in window, enter your username as (pennkey@upenn.edu), and in the next screen enter your PennKey password.
I’m in Copilot Chat. How do I know if I’m logged into Penn’s protected version?
Once logged in (see “How do I get to Copilot Chat”) look in the lower left-hand corner of your browser window. You will see your profile picture or the icon for a profile picture there. Once you click on it, you should see your email address in the form of pennkey@upenn.edu.
Am I allowed to put student work into Copilot?
Entering student work into Microsoft Copilot raises considerations around student privacy. While Microsoft Copilot is a Penn-licensed tool that comes with some privacy protections, it is important to be aware of the risks associated with different types of data. If you are a student, contact your course instructor for guidance. If you are a faculty member, contact your department chair or dean. Please refer to Penn’s Office of Information Security’s Statement on Guidance for the University of Pennsylvania Community on Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence for additional guidance.
Are students allowed to upload my course materials into Copilot?
Please coordinate with your department. Refer to Penn’s Office of Information Security’s Statement on Guidance for the University of Pennsylvania Community on Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence and their Penn Data Risk Classification Guidelines as well as Penn’s Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Innovation’s guide on the use of generative AI.
Can I create an agent in Copilot Studio and publish it?
Agent creation is available, and agents can be shared with other Copilot Studio users at Penn. Publishing to a Teams channel or to a public website is not currently available due to the additional costs associated with those channels. Please have your IT support team open a ticket with ISC to ask for additional information.
