FAQ

What is ChatGPT EDU, as opposed to ChatGPT?

ChatGPT EDU is an enterprise level version of ChatGPT, with added default protections for not training OpenAI’s LLM on Penn data, among other protections. For general guidance on the risk classification for Penn data, see Data Risk Classification page

How do I get to ChatGPT EDU? How do I log in?

Using a browser, go to https://chatgpt.com and click on the black “login” oval in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window. In the OR box, type in pennkey@upenn.edu as your email address to log in. This will then bring up the Penn Web Login screen. Login using your PennKey username and password.

I’m in ChatGPT. How do I know if I’m logged into Penn’s protected version (vs. not logged in, or logged in with another account)?

To confirm you are logged in, see “How do I get to ChatGPT EDU” above. Once logged in, look in the lower left-hand corner of the browser window. You should see your name and the blue and red Penn shield. This confirms you’re logged in to Penn’s protected version.

Who do I contact for a ChatGPT EDU account? Is it true that I have to pay for a full year?

Have your local IT organization open a ticket with ISC. They will need a 26-digit budget code. You are required to pay for the account from the current month through the end of the given fiscal year in June.

Is there an OpenAI App for Mac and Windows?

Yes

  • macOS (Mac) - You can download the ChatGPT macOS app from OpenAI’s website. It requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) and Apple Silicon (M1 or newer).

  • Windows - There is a ChatGPT Windows desktop app, available through the Microsoft Store.

Can I create a custom GPT in my Penn ChatGPT EDU account?

Yes. Please see this link for how to share a GPT in the EDU enterprise.

I have a ChatGPT EDU account through Penn. My students also have ChatGPT accounts, but not through Penn. I built/want to build a custom GPT, why can’t my students find it?

The contract between Penn and OpenAI has strict protections around data privacy. GPTs in the EDU account are only available to users within the EDU account.

Am I allowed to put student work into ChatGPT EDU?

Entering student work into ChatGPT EDU raises considerations around student privacy. While ChatGPT EDU is a Penn-licensed tool that comes with some privacy protections, it is important to be aware of the risks associated with different types of data. If you are a student, contact your course instructor for guidance. If you are a faculty member, contact your department chair or dean. Please refer to Penn’s Office of Information Security’s Statement on Guidance for the University of Pennsylvania Community on Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence for additional guidance.

Are students allowed to upload my course materials into ChatGPT EDU?

Please coordinate with your department. Refer to Penn’s Office of Information Security’s Statement on Guidance for the University of Pennsylvania Community on Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence and their Penn Data Risk Classification Guidelines as well as Penn’s Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Innovation’s guide on the use of generative AI.

Can I use the OpenAI API?

At this time API access is not available for university users. ISC is working on a solution for providing API access to LLMs, including OpenAI.

Can I use other features that come out, such as Codex CLI or Canvas?

Please ask your IT support team to open a ticket with ISC to inquire about additional feature use. In some cases, features are available with a business use case and attestation that no high or moderate risk data will be involved in their use. In other cases, features are not yet available from the vendor or are under review with Information Security teams and have not yet been enabled.
