Grammarly Update: End of Pilot Transition

Penn's campus-wide Grammarly pilot began in January 2024 and is scheduled to officially end on December 31, 2025. Thank you to all of our pilot participants and campus partners who supported the initiative and provided valuable feedback.

Note: Please see the important information below regarding changes to Grammarly accounts on January 14, 2026.

 

What's next?

Beginning January 2026, ISC will offer Grammarly for Education licenses as a paid service to Penn affiliates at $87/year, with access granted upon request by school and center IT staff. A budget code will be required, and the licenses require an annual commitment.

Notes: 

  • Grammarly is currently not approved for use by undergraduate students.
  • Wharton faculty and staff will retain full access to Grammarly.

 

What will happen to my Grammarly pilot account?

  • No action is required before winter break. Grammarly pilot accounts will remain unchanged until January 14, 2026.
  • On January 14, 2026, Grammarly will transition pilot accounts to either paid Penn Grammarly for Education or free personal accounts.
  • If your school or center has granted you access to Grammarly for Education, a paid license will be assigned to your account.
  • All remaining pilot accounts will transition to a free personal Grammarly account with Grammarly's core features. Grammarly's free plan does not provide access to premium features, including advanced writing suggestions, plagiarism detection, and citation suggestions.
  • There is no data loss. All user documents and writing history remain available, and all accounts will remain active during and after the transition; they will not be deactivated or deleted.

Personal Grammarly accounts are not managed or supported by ISC, and do not have any of Penn's security, privacy, and legal protections. See our Generative AI Guidance Statement for more information about using generative AI safely and securely at Penn. 

 

How can I keep using Grammarly?

  • You can continue to use your free personal Grammarly account, and you have the option to upgrade to the premium plan at retail cost.
  • Do not use personal Grammarly accounts (free or premium) for Moderate or High Risk Data. Do not input confidential or sensitive data, including HIPAA data, personal health information (PHI), financial account information, SSNs, and credit card data.
  • If you'd like to continue using Penn's Grammarly for Education, please contact your IT Support Provider.

 

Grammarly Service Information

Grammarly is an AI-powered writing assistance tool that aims to improve users' writing quality, efficiency, and confidence. It works on many platforms and offers real-time feedback on various aspects of writing, such as grammatical errors, punctuation, usage of commonly confused words, and style elements, including tone and clarity.

 

Eligibility and Access

Beginning January 2026, Penn affiliates in participating schools and centers are eligible for Penn Grammarly for Education accounts.  

Please contact your school/center IT Support Provider for more information and to request access.

 

Security Controls for HIPAA Organizations

All users primarily affiliated with a HIPAA organization will be able to use Grammarly, but only under special security controls. These controls include: 

  • Grammarly Web Editor is blocked
  • Users will be required to use their PennKey to sign into Grammarly on computers managed by their local school/center IT organization.
  • Grammarly will work only with a designated list of applications:
    • Microsoft Office applications (Windows and macOS desktop and browser versions)
    • Notepad (Windows) and TextEdit (macOS)
    • Pages, Keynote, Numbers (macOS)
    • Apple Notes, Mail, and Messages (macOS)
    • Smartsheet
    • Slack
    • PennBox
    • Zoom
    • Adobe
    • Qualtrics
    • Jira/Atlassian
    • LabArchives

 

How to Install and Use Grammarly

Install Grammarly

Grammarly offers desktop applications for Windows and Mac, a web-based editor, browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, and a keyboard app for Android and iOS mobile devices. It works with browser-based applications like Microsoft 365, Google Workspace for Education, and Canvas.

*Grammarly Editor access is restricted and not available for PSOM, Dental, and Wellness users due to HIPAA requirements stated by Penn Medicine Privacy and the Office of Audit, Compliance, and Privacy.
